Accelerating Customer Capability Buildout through Automation

The Department of Defense (DoD), which is entrusted with managing a $740 billion budget, recognizes the timely criticality of IT modernization to bolster resilience and cyber defenses while supporting our nation’s warfighters.

Previously, provisioning cloud capabilities within DoD environments involved manual operations, leading to significant delays, spanning days or even weeks.

Soliel’s team of SMEs and engineers adeptly implemented an Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for Amazon Web Services (AWS), leveraging tools like AWS CloudFormation, AWS CDK, and AWS Lambda. This repeatable and scalable approach automated the creation and configuration of various AWS services, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security for DoD’s applications and services. Examples of cloud native capabilities utilized include:

  • Compute Infrastructure: EC2 Instances, ECS, Fargate, AWS Lambda, ECS, EKS, AWS Batch
  • Storage Infrastructure: Amazon S3, Amazon EBS, Amazon EFS
  • Networking Infrastructure: Amazon VPC, Private and Public IP space, Security Groups, Amazon Route 53, Elastic Load Balancing
  • Database Infrastructure: Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Aurora
  • Security Infrastructure: AWS IAM, AWS WAF, AWS Secrets Manager, AWS KMS

By implementing the IaC MVP, Soliel seamlessly automated the deployment of several DoD enterprise services to AWS GovCloud, reducing deployment times and ensuring consistency across environments. Leveraging Gitlab for version control and CI/CD pipelines, updates are now delivered rapidly and reliably, minimizing manual effort and enhancing overall project efficiency.
